Knowing where to begin can be challenging, particularly with all of the misinformation out there. It doesn't have to be complex.
Whether you are seeking a return to walking program, or something a little more substantive - I can help customize a progressive program for you that your joints and body can tolerate.
What's the best way to maintain muscle while losing weight? Its a big concern, and there are more options than just trying to eat massive volumes of protein.
In all honesty - the research is confusing; but by using what is known along with my exercise science and rehab knowledge, I can help you find a range of exercises that will help maintain strength and muscle function as optimally as possible.
Moving beyond the focus on the loss of weight, maintaining your loss can be confusing.
How much should you be exercising?
Should you join a gym now?
What is safe for you to do?
This is where a program that targets your specific needs while considering your underlying health presentations and capacity to exercise is important. This isn't the time to get derailed with an injury!
Weight loss will change your centre of mass, how you move and how your walk. This can be highly variable according to age, amount of body weight loss, and activity levels. What is often seen clinically is changes in walking (gait) patterns, balance alterations, and sometimes the emerging of hip, knee or back pain from the altered loading patterns of these joints. Focused exercises while transitioning your frame can help to prevent this, and at the first sign of pain developing - an assessment and early phase rehab program can certainly minimize the chance of pains and joint problems getting worse.
So should you do Pilates? Strength training? High Intensity Interval Training? Running? What is best for your body to help you with your weight loss journey, or in your recovery phase?
So many options out there; but the best thing to remember is that just because you have lost the weight does not mean your joints are ready to return to life as perhaps you once knew it.
It takes time to restore joint stability - and now that you are loading structures in a different way, this is going to be very new for your body.
Working out whats right for you is important.
Yes, losing weight will change your shape.
Exactly where it will change for you may not be the same as everyone else. Some more than others store a lot of fat through their gluteus maximus region; and so there can be a distinct change in size of your butt as a consequence. Saggy skin can turn up everywhere - often people also complain about the backs of their arms, their abdominal region, and more.
It is not something specific to Ozempic (despite being referred to as Ozempic Butt), it is simply from a rapid loss of weight - and in volumes that people have never experienced before - so it is noticed.
What to do about it? Tackle it with exercise. In the least, adjust your activity routine to maintain your muscle as much as possible, and when you feel ready - strength training to build that muscle back up as much as possible is important for function and the restoration of a wee bit of that bounce!
Just because you have reached a weight similar to where you were 20-30 years ago - doesn't mean you can suddenly exercise like you were 20-30 years younger.
